Overview

From public health, to homes, businesses, and local economies, climate change-related weather disasters and hazards are taking their toll on U.S. communities. Actions that increase local climate resilience can address these risks and support growth. At the same time, a strong local economy is needed for a community to be truly climate resilient, and economic development initiatives are at risk if they are not designed resiliently. That’s why economic development and climate resilience are inextricably linked.

With the increasing threat and severity of extreme weather, the future of cities and towns across the U.S. hinges on planning not only to avoid such catastrophic costs, but to spur economic growth as well.

C2ES’s new report, The Climate Resilience-Economy Nexus: Advancing Common Goals, explores projects where local leaders are advancing both economic development and climate resilience simultaneously to evoke real, substantial progress toward an economically vibrant, socially equitable, and climate resilient future.
C2ES’s new story map illustrates how communities in Maryland, Iowa, Florida, California, Virginia, New York, and South Carolina are providing climate resilience and economic benefits to their community and broader regions.
Communities across the country are experiencing severe impacts on their local economies and livelihoods from more intense and frequent extreme weather events due to climate change. Actions that work together to advance both economic development and climate resilience can address these risks and position communities to thrive in the changing climate. This webinar will explore on-the-ground projects at the nexus of economic development and climate resilience and illustrate how common strategies can reduce climate and economic risks and create new opportunities.
