Statement of Nathaniel Keohane
President, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions
July 1, 2025
On passage of the budget reconciliation bill by the U.S. Senate:
“American businesses have long recognized the vast economic opportunity in clean energy manufacturing and deployment—that these investments are critical to America’s growth, energy security, and competitiveness as the global transition to clean energy advances.
“By eliminating a number of clean energy incentives and slashing others, this bill represents a significant step backward for America’s energy future. Curtailing incentives for electricity generated from wind and solar power is particularly shortsighted. It will raise energy prices for households and businesses, threaten the reliability of the electric grid, and hamstring our economy just when electricity demand is soaring as a result of new factories and data centers. Cuts to wind and solar credits alone will raise electricity prices, decrease grid capacity, and wipe out hundreds of billions of dollars of investment over the next decade and all the jobs and growth that comes with that. And it will set back efforts to cut the climate pollution that is dangerously heating the planet.
“If there’s a bright spot, it is that the Senate bill would preserve tax credits for newer technologies like advanced nuclear, battery storage, geothermal energy, and carbon capture, as well as advanced manufacturing. That progress is significant, and the Senate’s steps to claw back some of the alarming House cuts is a sign that there is growing bipartisan support for the advanced energy future, driven by the jobs and economic benefits that come with it. It demonstrates that when Members of Congress listen to the interests of their constituents the case for investing in the clean energy economy is strong.
“C2ES will continue to work closely with policymakers and the business community to underscore the economic opportunities of clean energy – and put in place the policies that will build the abundant, reliable, and affordable clean energy system Americans deserve.”
