On the passing of Mauro Petriccione, Director General, Climate Action, European Commission:

“It was profound sadness to have learned of the sudden passing of Mauro Petriccione.

“Mauro led the work of DG Climate Action and the European Union during the difficult period of transition from the success of adopting the Paris Agreement and toward its full implementation – including putting in place key elements of the European Union’s climate policies and legislation. This was made all the more challenging due to the global impacts of COVID-19 and, more recently, rising fossil fuel prices in Europe and around the world.

“His dedication to the cause of ambitious climate action leaves a void that will be sorely felt.

“He will also be very much missed on a personal level. As someone who has worked closely with Mauro’s team, I saw how he always made time for staff and showed nothing but kindness.

“The thoughts of C2ES are with his family and also with our friends and colleagues at DG Climate Action, as well as more widely at the European Commission.”
