On May 21, 2009, the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee approved landmark climate and energy legislation. The American Clean Energy and Security Act calls for an economy-wide greenhouse gas cap-and-trade system and key complementary measures.  The full House is expected to vote on the bill this summer.

States MapMidwestern Accord
On June 8, 2009, members of the Midwestern Greenhouse Gas Reduction Accord released their Advisory Group's draft final recommendations for a regional cap-and-trade program. The program would cap emissions for six U.S. states and the Canadian province of Manitoba. Read Pew's statement   
New Fuel Standards
On May 19, 2009 President Obama announced new federal fuel economy standards.  By 2016, the federal standard will achieve the same fuel economy improvement as the California standard for vehicle GHG emissions would have if it were applied nationwide - 35.5mpg.
