The Paris Agreement and the Ambition We Need

As we approach COP27, a critical moment in building the political momentum needed to achieve the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement, questions are emerging as to the potential efficacy of its ambition mechanism, such as:

  • How can the mechanism, including the global stocktake (GST), generate clear signals and options that facilitate enhanced action and implementation at multiple levels, in particular the national level?
  • How can the mechanism generate enhanced action by non-Parties and various forms of international cooperative initiatives, as well as hold them more accountable?
  • Is the mechanism, which is based on a five-year cycle, fit for the purpose to respond to the urgency and catalyze the stringent action indicated in the latest reports of the IPCC?
