-On the occasion of the release of climate and energy legislation by Senators Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.)-

Today’s proposal from Senators Boxer and Kerry marks a critical step toward advancing comprehensive climate and energy legislation for the United States.  We face an urgent need to take command of our nation’s energy future and to direct it in ways that will achieve greater energy independence, spur the development of new clean energy technologies and jobs, and reduce the risks from climate change.  A successful effort in the Senate will require bi-partisan support, and Senators Boxer and Kerry have provided a sensible starting point for that process.  We look forward to working with them and other members of the Senate to advance environmentally-strong, cost-effective climate and energy legislation in this Congress.
