Climate and Energy Targets
Entergy has a long history of environmental leadership. In 2001, Entergy was the first U.S. utility to voluntarily commit to stabilize CO2 emissions. In 2011, Entergy adopted a holistic, 10-year environmental strategy, Environment2020, to provide further direction and improvement in our environmental performance.
Entergy’s Voluntary CO2 Stabilization Commitments:
- In 2001, Entergy partnered with Environmental Defense and became the first domestic utility to voluntarily enact a five-year plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 2000 levels. Entergy beat the original target by 23 percent while increasing sales 21 percent during the same period.
- In 2006, Entergy made a second commitment to stabilize CO2 emissions from its power plants and controllable purchased power at 20 percent below 2000 levels through 2010. Their cumulative CO2 emissions for the years 2006 through 2010 were more than 3 percent below the cumulative five-year target.
- Entergy’s current goal is to maintain CO2 emissions from power plants and controllable power purchases at 20 percent below 2000 levels by 2020.
Entergy also invests in a number of carbon sequestration projects as a way to stabilize the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Planting native hardwoods on the land Entergy owns and funding the reforestation of other acreage is expected to sequester millions of tons of CO2 gas over several decades. In addition, Entergy (through its Environmental Initiatives Fund) purchased greenhouse gas reduction credits representing the equivalent of removing roughly 172,000 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere or taking more than 30,000 vehicles off the road for one year.
Did You Know?
Climate change is arguably the most critical sustainability issue of our time. Its effects are being felt around the corner and around the world. And to make a real difference we all need to take action - on all fronts and at all levels, individually and together.
In response, Entergy and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions have partnered on the Make an Impact program to provide the tools enabling others to act - in their homes and in their communities - to make an impact.
