C2ES makes it easy to calculate your carbon footprint

Updated tool can help companies engage employees on sustainability

WASHINGTON – The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) today unveiled an easy-to-use online tool to help people determine their carbon footprint and take steps to reduce their impact on the environment.

The Make an Impact Carbon Calculator allows users to quickly see how much carbon pollution comes from their energy use at home and on the go and how their carbon footprint compares with the local average in their area. Users can then pledge to take energy- and money-saving steps that will reduce climate-changing emissions.

“With so many reports documenting the dire trends of global climate change, more people are asking themselves what they can do,” said C2ES President Eileen Claussen. “Solving our climate and energy challenges requires action on all fronts and at all levels from businesses, governments, and individuals. The Make an Impact Carbon Calculator gives people an easy tool to get started doing their part.”

The Make an Impact Carbon Calculator, first launched in 2009, has been updated with the latest energy data and a streamlined design that makes it fast and easy to use and share. It has also been designed to be a centerpiece tool of a company’s employee education and engagement efforts on sustainability.

“More companies are setting ambitious sustainability goals and empowering their employees to live and work in ways that are good for business and good for the environment,” said Katie Mandes, C2ES Vice President of Community Engagement. “This tool provides the perfect opportunity for companies to engage with their employees on this critical issue.”

Bank of America, Entergy, and Alcoa will host the new calculators on their Make an Impact websites to encourage their employees to learn more about ways to save energy.

Companies can co-brand and embed the calculator on their websites and encourage employees to participate in challenges to save energy. Make an Impact can provide aggregated metrics such as participation rates, average carbon footprints, and pledges to avoid carbon emissions.

Through online tools such as the carbon calculator, hands-on activities, and community outreach, C2ES and its corporate partners have reached more than 380,000 people who have committed to taking energy-saving steps that will keep more than 72 million pounds of greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere. That’s the equivalent of taking about 6,900 cars off the road.
