Director of Communications

The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), Arlington, VA

The Director of Communications crafts and implements communications strategies to deliver C2ES messages to its key audiences. This position reports to the Executive Vice President. The position is based in our Arlington, VA, office.

Starting Date:  As soon as possible

Major Responsibilities:

  • Working with senior and program staff in developing and implementing communications strategies and initiatives to promote C2ES programs and projects and support C2ES objectives.
  • Collaborating with staff in the creation of communications materials, including blog posts, web content, press materials, and infographics.
  • Editing C2ES blogs, articles, op-eds, briefs, reports, and website materials with an eye toward being clear and concise.
  • Monitoring C2ES program work and external news to coordinate scheduling of C2ES announcements and events, and to identify communications opportunities for C2ES and needs for talking points, blogs, or other communications strategies.
  • Managing media relations, including, building and maintaining relationships with members of the media, maintaining media contact lists, coordinating responses to media inquiries, pitching C2ES announcements, and supporting C2ES staff in their media engagement.
  • Writing speeches for the C2ES president, maintaining a list of talking points for the organization, and suggesting speaking opportunities for principals.
  • Planning and promoting events, including an annual conference (Climate Leadership Conference), panel discussions, press briefings, etc.
  • Directing email marketing, including writing/editing monthly e-newsletter and occasional special email blasts and fundraising appeals.
  • Overseeing social media to ensure consistency and thoroughness of social media campaigns.
  • Working with Director of Development on annual report and other C2ES marketing efforts.
  • Overseeing graphic and publication design.
  • Managing relations with website developer, graphic designers, printers, writers and other outside vendors.
  •  Working with communications manager to ensure efficient execution of other communications activities, including copyediting, layout, and posting of publications, creating videos, and administering the website.


  • 5+ years of communications experience
  • Nonprofit or government experience and understanding of federal government and politics a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or public relations preferred
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Strong time-management skills
  • Ability to see both the big picture and the details
  • Must be able to work collaboratively across programs
  • Proficiency with basic Microsoft programs and social media required.

Status: Full-time, regular, exempt
