Climate and Energy Targets
Greenhouse Gases:
Since the early 1990s when DuPont began taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the company has achieved major global reductions in emissions. In 1994 DuPont established its first greenhouse gas emissions goal and committed to reduce emissions by 40 percent from our 1990 base. After meeting that goal, in 1999 DuPont established a new goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent from a 1990 base. By the end of 2003 it had reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 72 percent.
DuPont's current goal current goal is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions at least 15 percent from a base year of 2004 by 2015. By 2010, it had achieved a reduction of 10.5 percent.
Energy:
DuPont currently sources 6.5 percent of total energy consumption from renewable energy sources and has a corporate goal to reduce its energy use from non-renewable sources by 10 percent per adjusted dollar revenue by 2020 compared to a baseline of 2010. DuPont has set a milestone of 3 percent by 2015.
Water:
In 2006, DuPont set a water reduction goal of reducing water consumption by at least 30 percent at global sites that are located where the renewable freshwater supply is either scarce or stressed as determined by the United Nations analysis of river basins globally. For all other sites, we committed to hold water consumption flat on an absolute basis through the year 2015, offsetting any increased demand from production volume growth through conservation, reuse and recycle practices.
The cellulosic ethanol team collaborated across multiple sites, functions and organizational structures to develop and scale up a novel, integrated technology package to produce ethanol from agricultural wastes such as corn stover and energy crops such as switchgrass.
