In the United States, BP is investing $500 million over 10 years into the Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI), the world’s first research centre solely dedicated to applying biotechnology to energy. The EBI is a collaboration between BP, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Universities of California and Illinois. The company is also partnering with DuPont to develop biobutanol, which may be a step forward from ethanol as it provides greater fuel economy and can be blended into fuel with higher concentrations.
