Statement of Eileen Claussen
President, Pew Center on Global Climate Change
June 11, 2009
The Midwest region is home to many carbon-intensive industries and thus faces tremendous challenges in addressing climate change. But given its existing manufacturing infrastructure, skilled workforce, and renewable energy and carbon capture and storage potential, the Midwest stands to gain from well-designed climate policies that protect consumers and business while reining in emissions.
These recommendations advance sensible climate solutions for the region, demonstrating that climate policy – particularly cap and trade – can be made to work for the Midwest while helping drive efforts to build a strong national program that reduces emissions and spurs economic growth. I commend all involved in this effort.
